Gothic Revival Victorian

With its gingerbread woodwork, decorative plaster and cavernous volumes, Gothic Revival architecture can easily skew dark and overly traditional. Yet we were determined to keep the charm while updating the function. When modernizing a period home like this, the initial impulse for many is to remove ornate period details, but we actually added to what remained. We restored original wood and decorative plaster throughout the home and added period appropriate moldings and cabinetry to areas where character had been stripped away.  Our clients wanted a home that was bright and colorful. It was also important to them that the home be livable and family friendly but also formal enough to entertain. Working closely with our clients, we selected art for the home and used it, along with their collection of Turkish rugs, for inspiration. We then layered in modern lighting and colorful furnishings that have just as much attitude as the architecture to bring the home into the present while staying true to its original style.
